Gladiator Movie Story Line

In this epic historical drama by director Ridley Scott, a man steals his name and reputation to win him back and win the freedom of his people. In 180, the death of Emperor Marco Aurelio (Richard Harris) brought the Roman Empire into chaos. Maximus (Russell Crowe) was one of the most talented and reliable generals of the Roman army and the emperor’s chief adviser.

In 180 AD the Hispano-Romanian General Maximus Decimus Meridius wanted to return home after securing the Roman army against the German tribes near Vindobona, in Limes Germanicus.

Emperor Marco Aurelio told Maximus that his own son, Commodus, could not rule and asked Maximus to change Rome (Italy) as permission to protect him from corruption. After hearing that, he killed his father.
